Coast to Coast Teaching
Writer-in-Residence New York State Writer’s Institute
Skidmore College, Saratoga Springs, New York
Every July for the past 7 years, I have been writer-in-residence at the New York State Writers Institute. I read student novel manuscripts. This is one of my favorite experiences every year. I fantasize about the next summer starting at the end of the current summer’s residency. I also spend a glorious amount of time working on my own work while I am in New York.

I teach the novel writing courses at UCSD Extension. The students come in to the classroom with a huge story in their head that they want to put down on paper. The hardest part of my job is to show them how to take that unwieldy thing called “idea” and piece it out effectively. The best part of my job is that I get to hear about 20 new stories every quarter.

I have been running a workshop in my home for 12 years. We call ourselves the Revisionistas. Our motto: We write. We revise. I keep the group small, no more than 8 members of solid writers with serious goals of publication. We aren’t completely serious though. We like to nosh on appetizers and wine. And we have holiday parties to beat all others. We do our own readings. Once we held a seance. Writing group for ghosts? But isn’t that what our characters are? If you live in San Diego area and are interested in any private work, I also do one-on-one coaching.
